BienvenidaWelcome

Hello, family, friends and curious folks who landed here by accident.

I'm Martha, a curly-haired Mexican living in China. A lover of cumbia, tacos and photography, I decided to teach myself to shoot with more craft, to find my style and photograph with intention. My tools: my phone and my brother Efra's Olympus Trip 35 (film).

What is this?

It's a site I built hand in hand with my friend Claude to document how my own little photography school came to be.

There was so much information online that I felt overwhelmed and didn't know where to start. So one sleepless night, instead of counting sheep, I chose to build something tailor-made: to order my mind and look beyond the usual famous photographers. 🐑📷 Hence the motto: learning without the hassle, without 麻烦 (máfan), Chinese for "bother" or "complication".

I curated a map of 152 photographers from 65 countries (women, men and the LGBT+ community) to learn from them and understand their contexts.

Like any good school, there's homework: I built myself a daily plan of technical exercises and lessons to complete.

And like any student, I have to hand in a project with a deadline: 108 days to build a portfolio around 5 main themes.

This site is here to take apart how I built my app: a window into my brain and into the photos that catch my eye, crooked, blurry, odd or lovely. What matters isn't that every photo comes out perfect, but consistency, intention and finishing the challenge.

If you want to see exactly how I work, step into my app: every section is there in more detail. For now, enjoy. And if you have a film, a documentary, an article, a song, a tip or anything to recommend, I'd love to get it. Leave it in my app, under Culture → From friends.

My mission

This project is for the love of it.

I do it to build technique, feed my curiosity and learn from the world's ways of seeing. Above all, to enjoy it without losing authenticity.

I'll always look for solitude that feels accompanied, humor that splashes us, and irreverence that arrives with respect and affection.

Credits: I can't code, so this project is also my way of making peace with AI. The photos, the idea, the eye, the structure and the curation are mine. AI (Claude) wrote the code and helped me research and draft the lessons and exercises. What's mine is mine, and what's AI's is AI's.

  1. Una sola cosa activa a la vezOne thing active at a time

Everything else is a library waiting, not a to-do.

  2. La teoría, justo a tiempoTheory, just in time

A lesson sticks when I use it the same day.

  3. Compararme conmigoCompete with my past self

My photos from a month ago, not Instagram's.
